Where it all started
American Express
Sam was one of the leading Business Development Managers on American Express’s UK FX desk, where he saw firsthand how rewarding clients for their loyalty delivered incredible client retention. Amex was the only FX provider offering a reward scheme, giving clients Membership Rewards points each time they exchanged currency, points they could redeem for flights, hotels, and holidays.
When Amex closed its global FX division in 2023, Sam and his colleagues were sadly made redundant.
On one call informing a long-time client their account would be closed, the client said, 'How else will I pay for my holiday? The reward points are how I take my family away each year.'
That moment highlighted a clear upcoming gap in the market, a need for an FX provider that combines competitive pricing with tangible rewards. Reciprocal was built to fill that gap.
